Supplement your athletic training program with a holistic weekly yoga practice that promotes overall physical and mental well-being for athletes.
A healthy mind-body connection (or somatic awareness) extends to all the different aspects of life. Think of it like this: When we put physical stress on our body, such as carrying something heavy or holding a challenging yoga posture, our body responds. The response differs for each of us but can include things such as changes in heart rate, shallow breathing, and changes in movement patterns that pull us out of alignment.
On a much more subtle level, these changes create physical sensations to which we are constantly attaching thoughts and ideas that we have acquired through our personal experiences. If a sensation gives rise to a distressing thought or idea, it can activate the nervous system and create additional mental or emotional stress.
When even small movement dysfunctions happen repeatedly over time it can contribute to discomfort and injury to our physical, mental, and emotional bodies. My strategy when working with youth athletes involves helping them build somatic awareness while they challenge themselves. With me, athletes will improve their strength, stability, and flexibility, as well as an understanding of their unique movement patterns.
